Viruses and malware are mostly preventable. You should only visit websites you know are reputable. Also, avoid downloading any software from unknown companies.

The biggest gateway for malware, in my experience from cleaning out computers, is in free download software like Kazaa, Ares, and the like. All it takes is one bad download to get malware on your computer. That malware then invites its friends to take residence on your computer.

My recommendation is to just pay for music or rip it from your CDs; free music costs you money every time you call me or another tech to clean out your PC. Eventually, free music isn't worth it.

Probably the worst thing about malware on your PC is that you can never be sure that it's 100% clean after an infection.

I use about 8 different antivirus and anti-malware programs to clean your computer, sometimes more; because each one catches something the other left behind. Even then, new versions of viruses come out every day.

Prevention is the best approach.
